Scientists Discover Deep-Sea Creature That Glows in 7 Different Colors
Researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute have discovered a stunning new species of deep-sea jellyfish that can produce seven distinct colors of bioluminescence simultaneously — a first in recorded marine biology. The creature, temporarily named *Chromolucida septimana*, was found at a depth of 3,200 meters off the coast of California during a remotely operated vehicle dive in March. "When we first saw it on the cameras, we thought there was a malfunction," said lead researcher Dr. Alicia Chen. "The colors shifted from blue to green to red in a rhythmic pattern. Nothing like it has ever been documented." The jellyfish measures approximately 40cm across and appears to use its light display to attract prey and potentially communicate with others of its species — though scientists say much more research is needed. Video footage of the discovery has already been viewed over 18 million times on social media.
