Apple's New AI Feature Writes Better Code Than Most Senior Developers, Study Finds
A new independent study from Stanford University has found that Apple's recently unveiled AI coding assistant outperforms the majority of senior software engineers on standardized coding benchmarks — a finding that has sent shockwaves through the tech industry.
The study, conducted over three months with 200 participants ranging from junior developers to 20-year industry veterans, found that the AI completed tasks 40% faster on average and produced code with 28% fewer bugs than human counterparts.
"The results genuinely surprised us," said Professor Daniel Kim, who led the research. "We expected it to be competitive with junior developers. We didn't expect it to outperform most of the senior cohort."
Not everyone is alarmed. Many developers argue that the AI excels at routine tasks but struggles with creative problem-solving, architecture decisions, and understanding business context — areas where human judgment remains superior.
Apple declined to comment on the study specifically but noted that the tool is "designed to work alongside developers, not replace them." The debate, however, is far from settled.
